"How to learn freelancing online" was my keyword when I was starting my freelance journey.
Every freelancer wants to learn freelancing and become the best in their selective field.
And how do you start? obviously by learning new techniques and methods.
Do you know what experts say, learning a skill is not an option anymore it has become a necessity.
The more you learn the more you earn- apply these rule in freelancing and be ready to see your skyrocketing growth. Many people keep juggling between their freelancing and their personal life.
Due to juggling between these two things your brain can't concentrate on any of them properly. And forget about learning freelancing. You don't have time to spend time with your family.
And this is the common problem of every freelancer who has just started his freelancing journey.
So today I will tell you about how to learn freelancing online.
So without wasting any time.
Let's dive in...
Before talking about freelancing I will tell you why to choose freelancing over a corporate job.
Why to freelance
Do you know how big is the freelance market? I don't have to say a word just see this image.

As you can see it contributes more than 4% of GDP to the economy. Many people are choosing freelancing because it is convenient. It has almost 0 expenses.
Not just individuals many companies are also willing to work with freelancers rather than hiring employees.
Now I will tell you the reasons why.
- It is less expensive than an employee
- It saves electricity
- companies provide cab facilities which can be reduced if they hire a freelancer.
- They don't have to provide a computer to freelancers as they have their own.
why choose freelancing?
First of all, why do you need a reason to become a freelancer? If you have a skill and faith in yourself. And confident enough that you can market your skill then become a freelancer. seriously.
And if you need reasons to become a then here are some:
- you don't have to report your work to anyone. be your own boss.
- no office politics and running behind the promotion.
- freedom and flexibility- a major reason.
- you choose to have clients and projects.
- Make money like never before.
- you will grow in this business rather than staying stuck in the same position.
Now I hope these are enough reasons for you to be a freelancer
Now I am assuming you are a beginner in freelancing and currently you don't have any skill. which is neither good nor bad. so here I can guide you with skills and market demands.
finding the skill.
This is the basic and probably the most important skill if you want to be a freelancer. Skill is what you offer your service in return for money.
This can be something as simple as removing image background and as complex as creating a mobile application.
For finding a perfect match you must do market research. In my earlier articles, I have shared with you the list of high-demand freelance skills.
Just for you:
choose any skill from the list which is suitable for you. And try to market it as much as you can on social media. If you are willing to invest money in advertising then use Google AdWords and Facebook ads.
This can be a good headstart towards marketing your skill.
And if not then try to market it on social media by sharing your freelance profile in groups and market it.
You can even write answers on quora related to your work and your specialization(aa link)
so now you know which skill you want to learn and now I will tell you how to learn them.
How to learn freelancing online
#1 step: youtube
you might be wondering why I recommend youtube again and again. I will tell you why youtube is my #1 source of learning anything online.
Even when I started freelancing 90% of the time I was dependent on youtube for learning skills. I will tell you why you should learn from youtube.
Everybody knows youtube is the world's largest video sharing platform. You can find millions of wide variety of videos on youtube. such as DIYs, tutorials, how-to's, etc.
you can learn almost any skill from youtube and that too for free. you will find videos from "how to tie a shoeless" to "rocket science engineering" literally everything.
Do you know?
According to a recent survey, 56% of people turned to youtube to learn new things. Youtube was specially designed for curious minds just like you.
you will find popular learning resources from here. many popular authors, bloggers, and freelancers share their mistakes and learning through youtube.
If you want to learn freelancing then you must follow them. It will give you a great boost in learning freelancing.
And my second best source of learning is...
#2 step: online courses
You don't need a college degree to start freelancing you just need the right mindset and skill to offer to your clients. after youtube my second recommendation is online courses.
whether it's content writing, content creation, web development it doesn't matter. You must learn how to do that work without applying for any freelance work.
If you are willing to invest few bucks in learning freelancing online then you can purchase online freelancing courses.
I recommend you to buy Seth Godin's freelancer course. It is one of the most valuable online courses one could ever enroll in.
And in any case, if you don't know who is Seth Godin then see this image.
If you are a beginner then It is the only course you need to purchase. the course duration is of 4.5+ hours you will even get a certificate of completion. If you still have any confusion then just give a look at its rating.
And there will be many beginners who are willing to invest money but they don't have much budget then they can go for other courses.
udemy contains hundreds of courses on freelancing which starts with the pricing of as low as $10. see here.
Note:- I don't make any commission from udemy I recommend you because I have used udemy already and I had a great experience with it.
Just see my learning library of udemy
If you want to get a freelancing course through udemy for free because you don't have money then I have a little trick for you.
follow these steps:
- Go to udemy and search for freelancing
- On the left side, you will see the filter option
- select the pricing option
- tick the "free" option box
Then you will get hundreds of freelancing courses for free.
just like this
Here are few platforms from where you can buy online courses
I hope now you know everything about freelancing courses.
now let's talk about the next source of learning
3. Books & articles
How can I learn freelancing online? How can I become a great freelancer?
These two are great questions to find your "why".
If you have a regular reading habit then let me tell you you will happy with these books I will be recommending you freelancing. Actually not just books but also a few blogs.

You will find excellent content on their blog and I assure you. If you spend time reading those books & articles it will be the best investment you can make.
Let me tell you a harsh truth about freelancing.
freelancing is evolving, quickly.
let me tell you, your clients are getting smarter and tricky. The freelancing market has expanded over the world and becoming bigger day by day.
And even the competition has become stiffer. It has become a long-term game now. You shouldn't expect that you will get your first client on the very first day.
And even the worse part is:
Doing it all alone.
I am assuming that you will be freelancing online and you need to work with electronic gadgets. staring at your computer screen all day, pitching clients, cold emails, writing work, advertising, etc.
Doing everything alone has two outputs.
Either it will be boring or interesting, it all depends on your mindset and your enthusiasm towards your work.
And sometimes learning online through videos are also boring.
And the worst part is you need in-depth knowledge for freelancing at least some beginner knowledge at the initial stage.
That's why it is necessary to take out time to read. A freelancer must know something about everything. And has to be little aware of the knowledge of everything.
Here are few recommendations:
1. The freelancer's bible
As the title suggests, it is all in one practical guide for freelancing. And it not just suggest how to do the work but also how to market yourself, set pricing, negotiation and many more.
2. The four-hour workweek
In this book, Tim Ferris has exposed some big secrets of working on oneself and cleared a path to riches for everyone. it is a big stereotype that people have to grind all day to create wealth and legacies. but it is not true.
In this book, Ferris argued that you can simply work four hours a week and still manage to create a five-figure income.
Few more books on freelancing:
- remote by Jason fried
- rework by David Hansson and Jason fried
- my creative (side) business by Monika kanokova
